This section is in place to answer questions that are frequently asked by the sector and individuals related to the sector:

Q: How do I become a PHA member?

A: To become a PHA member driver, you will need to fill in an application form and pay a small membership fee (this fee is to cover administration). Drivers can either come in to the office and sign up, or approach PHA representatives who will be visiting private hire offices on a regular basis.

Q: How are issues dealt with?

A: There are two ways in which issues can be dealt with; the first is by coming to PHA office and booking an appointment to see a specialist. Or the second is to approach your own office representatives, where by they could put forth any issues in the quarterly meeting.

Q: How do I use a Private Hire Vehicle?

A: A Private Hire Vehicle is licensed only to be pre-booked through a Private Hire Operator. If a Private Hire Vehicle is not booked in advance this may lead to the driver, the vehicle and the passenger being uninsured. A Private Hire Vehicle cannot be hailed or flagged down under any circumstances.

Q: How many Passengers can a Private Hire Vehicle carry?

A: Private Hire Vehicles can only carry four passengers at any one time; however some take more, e.g. people carriers.

Q: What fare should I be charged?

A: The fare table should be displayed within the vehicle for public view. The fares are calculated by the operator and are based on mileage. The fare should be agreed with the operator upon booking the vehicle.
